The great sun god, which gave light to all of us on the island, was growing old and tired. Before our people were settled on the earth, the sun god could not keep the light forever, so one day–no one knows when–the sun god stopped shining. The days grew black and the nights grew cold. The blackness grew sad and lonely and wanted companions. So the darkness split open and divided to create the lights that gleam and glow like fireflies in the dark sky.
The Sun and the Moon Brent Berry
In the beginning, the great yellow bird flew up into the sky and got lost in the world above. So the bird had babies and those babies had babies, which made a big, yellow circle now known as the sun. All the babies from the great yellow bird that tried to find their way home ventured too far and froze together, turning white and creating the moon.
The Earth and Seas Becca Gill
The world was dark and gray and dead. The only thing alive and colorful was Sky. Sky was full of all colors, and as Land and Sea watched the sky, they became enraged and full of jealousy. One night as Sky was resting, Land and Sea plotted to attack. At a time no one knows, they struck, and Sea stole the beautiful blue from the sky. Next, Land stole the green. The battle lasted three days. When Land and Sea felt beautiful in their new colors, Sky said, “If you had told me of your feelings, I would have shared my joyous colors with you.” As Land and Sky were overcome with guilt, they all forgave each other and the world was in beautiful and colorful harmony.
The Four Seasons Kainan Kent
In the beginning of time, there were four spirits: Summer with his helper Spring and Winter with his helper Fall. There was a great battle between Summer and Winter. Winter created an ice age, but summer melted it, even though it took a while. Disaster threatened the earth until finally they came to an agreement: they would share the world. Now we have Summer, who sends his helper Spring to show he is on his way, and we have Winter, who sends his helper Fall to do the same.
The Plants and Animals Joseph Smith
In the beginning, there was the sun and the earth. Earth loved the sun, but the sun was only interested in colorful planets, so she asked the moon how she could become colorful and get Sun’s attention. “I shall bring upon you colors of vibrant greens and lush blues and all the colors of the rainbow,” said Moon. But soon the plants were overgrown, and Earth could not hold them, so Moon said, “I shall create creatures to eat the plants and save your life.” Sun finally noticed her as the most beautiful planet he had seen, and he now looks at her all day long. But Moon had fallen for Earth while helping, and whenever Sun turns his back, Moon checks on her again.
Humans Katie Sherrod
When the gods created animals, chaos broke out on Earth. They had a great meeting and decided that the animals should be split into groups and watched over by a new creature, man. So the earth god created for it a body. The water god filled it with blood. The fire god gave it temperature. The air god gave it breath, and the spirit god gave it life. A goddess gave it love, so that it could reproduce and populate the earth.
